The only way to do that is to check out the earning opportunities it offers. This way, you will have a clear picture of how well you can earn and how much time you need to earn from it.
How To Make Money As A Proofreader From Proofreading Services?
If you are accepted as their proofreader, you will be given access to the member dashboard. Here you can find everything you need to earn. Most of the time (if not always), proofreading services will assign you a task when you are accepted as their proofreader.
Generally, these are only part-time jobs where you have to edit/proofread documents like dissertations, essays, manuscripts, theses and more. Each job will specify a changeover time/deadline, so you must ensure that you can meet the deadline before accepting the job.
The longest turnaround time I found while checking the site was 7 days, and the shortest was 3 hours, so you’ll find different jobs in terms of deadlines/turnaround times.
Now, each job will pay you by the hour and the hourly rate will range from $19 to $46 depending on the urgency of the job and the turnaround time. Of course, the more urgent the task, the higher the rate.
A large number of jobs are available at any given time and some of them are even from reputed companies or even government agencies. This shows how popular proofreading services are I would even say that it is one of the most popular proofreading service sites today because it is being used by famous schools and organizations.
How Do You Get Paid From Proofreading Services?
As described above, you will earn a fixed amount per hour of a job. Unfortunately, Proofreading Services do not have any information on how they pay their proofreaders. I wasn’t even able to get to the point where I was able to withdraw my earnings while testing the site.
But from what I can gather, Proofreading Services will either pay you via PayPal or direct bank transfer for each task you complete. Based on my experience, since it offers you this service for free, that means they will take a cut of your earnings as part of their service fee. I’m not 100% sure about this because Proofreading Services don’t talk much about how their proofreaders get paid.
But this usually works with freelance sites that have no subscription/membership fees. They take a cut of your earnings because they need to earn money from you to sustain their business.
How To Join The Proofreading Service?
What it says on the site is that it’s available worldwide. So, you will be able to apply as a proofreader wherever you are. But the main thing you need to note here is that you need to apply for the post of proofreader. So, there is actually no guarantee that you will be accepted as one of its proofreaders.
The application process is a little longer, and it involves taking an exam. When you apply, you actually have to take a test and you are given 20 minutes to complete it. If you do not complete it within that time, your application will be rejected.
The test is how well you know your grammar and English language. Also, it will ask you to write a few sentences about something. After completing the exam, you must submit your application. Then, the site will tell you that you must wait to be contacted if you passed the test or not.
Unfortunately, Proofreading Services also don’t say how long you have to wait to hear back from them. What you will get from them is that if you pass the test and they are interested in your services, they will contact you.
Now, here’s the problem. They usually accept 1 in 300 applicants. This is a very low acceptance rate, which is why I would say it is very difficult to break into this earning platform. They are very strict with who they take on as proofreaders because they are very specific about the work they submit to their clients.
They generally prefer experienced proofreaders, so if you’re just starting out, this might not be the most ideal option for you to earn extra cash.
